2024 College Prayer
God of Mercy,
We give thanks for the many unique talents that you have gifted each of us and our College community.
Walk alongside us as we carry the fire for reconciliation and justice.
Guide us to show compassion and care for our common home.
Lead us to continue to nurture a culture of excellence, with our students at the heart of our community.
May we use Your Son as a guiding light; the ultimate example of hospitality and God’s love in a human face.
We make this prayer through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Catherine McAuley, pray for us.
Message From Our Principal
Dear Mercy Community,
On behalf of all staff at the College, I would like to take this opportunity in print to welcome to our Mercy College learning community our Year 7 students and new students across Years 8 to 12, together with their families. We hope that our new students are settling in well and quickly feeling a valued part of our school community.
I also extend a very warm welcome to new staff who have joined our school community. We are blessed to have talented, dedicated and experienced staff joining us both in teaching and support roles.
Welcome to 2024
A new school year always reminds us of new beginnings, new possibilities. We re-focus on what our vision, mission and aim is as a Catholic school in the Mercy tradition. We hope and pray all members of our College experience the learning community of Mercy College as a horizon of hope and a home of personal and intellectual nourishment.
We often speak about the curriculum as the subjects and learning programs we offer. In reality the physical learning environment is an integral part of the curriculum because it creates the spaces in which our students can be inspired and supported to learn.
Over the January break, we ensured all was ready for our VCE students to resume learning in our refurbished West Building. The open plan rooms allow for collaborative or focussed study while the Year 12 lounge and courtyard gives students a place to relax and socialise between classes. We look forward to the finalisation of our Clairvaux canopy and facade in the coming weeks.
This year marks the 59th anniversary of the College and it promises to be another exciting chapter in our history. 2024 will witness the start of our new strategic plan and continuation of our Masterplan.
I hope the new facilities will strengthen and expand these learning experiences for our students and support staff in their work of ensuring growth in individual student outcomes.
2024 College Theme - Find Light Through Mercy
On Tuesday we gathered as a Mercy community of students, staff and families for our Commencement Eucharist. We thank Auxiliary Bishop Northern Region - Bishop Curtin for being our celebrant and blessing the year ahead for us. A year where our focus will be on our 2024 College Theme, Find Light Through Mercy. In choosing this theme, we hope that our community will come to an understanding that they as individuals like Catherine McAuley can positively contribute to our world and model a way of being that enables others to find light through mercy.
As part of our celebration we welcomed our Year 7 cohort through the red door of Mercy. This symbolic action unites them forever to our Mercy family and story. We also commissioned our 2024 Student Executive. It was wonderful that their families could stand beside them and affix their badges, symbolising that their families walk alongside them in their leadership journey.
Improving student wellbeing and learning outcomes
In our ever-evolving educational landscape, it is crucial to stay attuned to the needs of our students. Seeking feedback, staying informed through professional reading and understanding current educational trends are not just initiatives; they are calls to action. This became abundantly clear to us and the Student Wellbeing team in the latter part of 2023.
The positive responses from students in the 2023 MACSSIS survey were heartening, but a desire for stronger bonds, increased learning confidence and more avenues for student voice and agency was evident. In response, our Wellbeing Team team together with students have designed our 2024 Student Wellbeing Program - C.L.E.A.R which is detailed later in this newsletter.
It was great parents and carers were able to join us for this week’s Year 7 Welcome BBQ/ Wellbeing Meet and Greet where families were able to get to know each other and learn more about transition at Mercy. Special thanks to our parents for their support and help on the BBQ - Paul Capasso and Simon Paolo, server - Silvana Mirabelli and O’Heas Bakery for their generous donation of bread .
It was also to have parents and carers join us for the Years 8-12 Individual Student Support Meetings to meet their child’s wellbeing teacher and discuss their child’s SMART goal which they have set for their learning across the semester. For those who were unable to attend, please reach out to your child’s Welbeing teacher if you require further information and/or support.
It is important that we work in partnership with families, in order to better support your daughter to experience a sense of wellbeing and confidence which in turn is an essential foundation for achieving her personal best this year.
Continuous Improvement
Improving outcomes for all students drives the culture of continuous improvement at Mercy and informs our new reinvigorated School Improvement Plan which will cover the period 2024 - 2027.
Priority 1 - Leadership
Goal: To further develop leadership capability across the College
Priority 2 - Student Agency
Goal: To elevate student agency and wellbeing
Priority 3 - Student Wellbeing
Goal: To embed a clear and consistent approach to student wellbeing
Priority 4 - Instructional Practices
Goal: To improve pedagogical practices
Keeping school improvement front of mind ensures that we hold the students’ and the college community’s best interests at heart in all we do, whether compiling a new School Improvement Plan or going about our daily work.

It is a pleasure to have you join us as we begin a new school year with full and open hearts.
Let us never lose trust in the patience and mercy of God.
Lila McInerney
College Principal
Director: Student Wellbeing and Faith
I’d like to extend a very warm welcome back to all of our students and families to the 2024 academic year. It is a privilege to be able to come to Mercy’s beautiful campus and see the bright, smiling faces of our young people every day! I feel very blessed to walk alongside your child as they grow in their faith journey and cultivate positive wellbeing.
The purpose and vision of our student wellbeing and faith teams are clearly aligned to our MACS 2030 strategic plan entitled: Forming Lives to Enrich the World. We aim to ensure that every student is inspired and enabled to flourish and enrich the world. Our purpose is to foster the formation of the whole person, forming lives of faith, hope and love in the light of Jesus Christ.
It is through this vision that our 2024 College Theme has emerged: Find Light Through Mercy. In Mark’s Gospel, we see a patient Jesus who calls upon his disciples to trust in Him and follow His way. Despite His followers not always understanding Jesus’ mission, He is patient with them and always willing to walk alongside them as He calls them to not only follow Him but to go one step further and be ‘fishers of men’ (Mark 1:17). Mark’s depiction of Jesus is inclusive, caring, community-focused, and prayerful. Jesus demonstrated compassion as He went to those who needed him the most; the tax collectors and sinners. He showed hospitality by breaking bread so that all can eat, and teaching His disciples to do the same. Jesus exemplified justice by always doing the right thing by His followers even when they frustrated Him by not understanding. He manifested excellence by being the perfect role model for His disciples. Through the analysis of key passages in Mark’s Gospel, the 2024 Student Executive Team have learned that “the cost of discipleship is too much to bear for some” (Fr Brendan Byrne) and is undoubtedly challenging for all, but those who trust in Jesus can always find light in the darkness. In the same way, we are called to find light through our Mercy values and follow them in 2024. As part of our exploration of the College theme during Orientation Day, students created their own ‘values lanterns’ - red paper lanterns to emulate Chinese lanterns which shine their light so others can find their way. They were asked to consider which of our College values they would like to focus on this year, and incorporate this into the design and decoration of their lantern.
During Orientation Day, students were also introduced to our new C.L.E.A.R Wellbeing Program. The pillars of this program are Community, Learning, Emotional Intelligence, Agency, and Relationships. The program aims to foster a:
- CLEAR sense of wellbeing
- CLEAR understanding of how to support student wellbeing
- CLEAR ability to use these skills now and when students leave school
This Wellbeing Program will be facilitated through our daily Wellbeing Period (after Recess) by the Wellbeing Team which comprises the following staff:
- Wellbeing Teachers
- Learning and Wellbeing Level Leaders
- Counselling Team
- Learning Diversity Team
- Director: Student Wellbeing and Faith
Mercy College is excited to provide our young people with this opportunity to build positive wellbeing in order to support the full flourishing of every child. We are always seeking input from students and families and would love to hear from you about how the CLEAR Wellbeing Program is progressing.
Please know that the Wellbeing Team at Mercy is always a phone call or email away, and we are here to support you. I hope you have all had a positive start to the school year and look forward to the journey ahead.
God bless,
Nima Ballenger
Director: Student Wellbeing and Faith
Deputy Principal
As we embark on a new school year, it is with great pleasure that I extend a warm welcome to each and every one of you. Whether you are returning to our school community or joining us for the first time, we are thrilled to have you here.
To our returning students, welcome back! I encourage you to approach this year with a sense of determination and a willingness to embrace new challenges and opportunities. Let us build upon the achievements of the past and strive for even greater accomplishments together.
To our new students, I extend a special welcome. Starting at a new school can be both exciting and nerve-wracking, but rest assured, you are among friends here. Our staff and fellow students are eager to support you as you navigate this new chapter of your academic journey. Embrace the diversity of experiences and perspectives that make our school community truly special.
As we embark on this new school year, let us commit ourselves to excellence in all that we do. Let us approach each day with a spirit of curiosity, collaboration, and resilience. Together, we will create a positive and enriching learning environment where every student feels valued, supported, and empowered to achieve their full potential.
Student Planner
The Student Planner has been distributed to all students from Years 7-12 to assist with organisation and study skills. We encourage parents/carers and students to utilise this valuable resource daily and ensure that homework tasks are recorded and completed.
NAPLAN Online 2024
The new NAPLAN testing window for 2024 is now from 13-25 March. This means the results will be in the hands of education authorities and school systems earlier in the year to inform teaching and learning programs throughout the rest of the school year. It will also give teachers more time to better assess what support students need for the rest of the year. Check out the NAPLAN key dates for this year and beyond.
NAPLAN Information for Parents and Carers
Mercy College will be conducting NAPLAN Online for Years 7 and 9 students on the following dates.
- Wednesday 13 March
- Thursday 14 March
- Friday 15 March
- Monday 18 March
Families will receive further detail about NAPLAN dates and times at Mercy College in the coming weeks.
VCE/VCE-VM Parent-Teacher-Student Conferences
The VCE/VCE-VM Parent-Teacher-Student Conferences will be held on Tuesday 27 February.
This is an opportunity for teaching staff at Mercy College to share with families their understanding of the needs of each VCE and VCE-VM student, working in partnership with parents, guardians and students to discuss strategies that will enhance the understanding of the course content. Such partnerships are essential to the success of each student and ensure that each girl can achieve their personal best.
We encourage all parents and guardians to make appointments with their daughter’s teachers. Students are strongly encouraged to participate in these interviews.
We look forward to meeting with you and your daughter, and discussing how to best support and extend her to achieve her goals and ‘flourish’ in the learning environment.
Families will receive further correspondence outlining how to access and make bookings for the VCE/VCE-VM Parent-Teacher-Student Conferences.
Special Provisions within the VCE and VCE-VM
The VCAA Special Provision policy provides students in defined circumstances with the opportunity to participate in and complete their secondary level studies.
The underlying principle of the VCAA Special Provision policy is to ensure that the most appropriate, fair and reasonable options are available for students to demonstrate their capabilities if their learning and assessment programs are affected by disability, illness, impairment or other circumstances. Special Provision should provide equivalent, alternative arrangements, but not confer an advantage to any student over other students.
Applications for Special Provisions close on Friday 8 March.
For further information please visit the VCAA website.
Year 7 Welcome BBQ and Year 8-12 Student Support Meetings
Thank you to the parents/carers for actively engaging in our important partnership by attending these sessions. We would also like to thank the Year Level Learning and Wellbeing Leaders and the Homeroom Teachers for running these sessions.
Nicholas Ambrozy
Deputy Principal
Year 7 Learning and Wellbeing Leader
As we began another academic year, it is with great excitement that we welcomed our incoming Year 7 students and their families to our Mercy community. Although we began the week with some nervous energy, we came together as a cohort with lots of talking, games and laughter to help us get to know each other. We have already overcome many obstacles including getting into our lockers, finding our way around the school and using our new laptops. In our Commencement Eucharist, our Year 7 students and Wellbeing Teachers were honoured to walk through the Red Door of Mercy to officially be welcomed to our community.
We were also very lucky to have the opportunity to share a meal together with families at our Welcome BBQ. We believe that a strong relationship with our families is the best way to support our students to flourish and we look forward to many more opportunities to do this moving forward. As our Year 7 students embark on this new chapter of their lives at Mercy College, we are committed to living out our motto for this year, “In Year 7, we grow together”.

Their eagerness to engage with learning and support one another sets a promising tone for the year ahead.
As we dive into the year together, I am honoured to have the opportunity to walk alongside you to foster an environment where every child can thrive academically, socially and emotionally. I can't help but feel grateful for the wonderful start to the year we've had. It's been heartwarming to have so many meaningful conversations with both students and their families. Hearing about their hopes and goals for the year has been fantastic and I cannot wait for what lies in the year ahead.
We had a great night meeting students and their families for the Individual Support Meetings. It was amazing to see everyone come together to discuss how we can support each student's journey. Whether it was setting goals, addressing concerns, or just sharing ideas, the sense of collaboration and support was wonderful to see.
Another highlight of the week was the Commencement Eucharist we shared as a school community. Coming together to mark the start of the academic year was a special moment. It reminded us of the values that bring us together – Compassion, Excellence, Hospitality and Justice.
Looking ahead, I'm excited about the journey we're on together. I believe that by continuing to build on the strong start we've had, we can make this academic year truly memorable and rewarding for all.
Please reach out to me with any questions you may have, I look forward to getting to know you all.

VCE Learning and Wellbeing Leader
Welcome back to all students and families in 2024, especially those beginning their VCE journey.
The final years of secondary school can be a daunting time in a young person’s life, workload and ‘finding the right balance’ can present some challenges to young people. The Class of 2024 have begun the year in the most inspiring and positive way. After many conversations with students I can honestly say how impressed I am with the attitudes, determination and positivity that has been on display. There is an excitement in the air as I walk the corridors of our beautiful new VCE building, of the possibilities that lay before our students. A faith and hope that is inspiring to not only me, but is being felt by all staff and students.
I am excited as the VCE Learning and Wellbeing Leader to work with all of our students to help motivate and encourage them all to reach for the stars and achieve their many hopes, desires and dreams.

Alumni News
Diane Psaila, Class of 1976
I am proud and excited to announce my appointment as a staff member of Mercy College in a dual role capacity of Risk and Compliance Officer and Alumnae Relations Officer.
These roles, as all roles, contribute to the growth of Mercy College with the backbone of upholding our values: Compassion, Excellence, Hospitality and Justice.
As an alumna, it feels surreal to be back here, and as I settle in, I often think of the Year 7 student, (form 1 back then), beginning her secondary schooling and looking towards an exciting future of exploring and developing areas of interest and the possibilities they bring beyond the College gates.
I have come full circle
This is where I once was
These walls that held my aspirations
A teenager looking forth
Guided by values that still hold steadfast
I am back
From a perspective of maturity
Blessed with the gift of hindsight
Excited to be a part of the Mercy Community
Contributing to safety and sustainability
Connecting generations - Past, present, future
Encouraging you
To be the best version you can be
Each and every day
I look forward to an exciting and productive 2024 and commencing preparations for our 60th anniversary celebration as Mercy College Coburg: 1965 – 2025.

School Communication
From time to time parents may wish to contact College staff with matters relating to their daughter. The College encourages all parents to liaise with staff to support the wellbeing and learning of your daughter.
To facilitate effective and efficient contact and responses, we ask parents to please follow the table below regarding who best to contact:
Communication about… | Initial Contact | Secondary Contact |
A specific subject, assessment task or class work | Subject teacher | Learning Area Leader |
Student’s work progress over a number of subjects, her lack of focus or motivation, peer relationships | Homeroom Teacher or Subject Teacher | Learning and Wellbeing Level Leader or Learning Area Leader |
VCE/VCE-VM | Deputy Principal | Careers and Pathways Leader |
Tuition fees and charges | College Reception | Finance Team |
Train or bus travel incidents | College Reception | Learning and Wellbeing Level Leader |
First Aid requirements | College Reception | Marketing and Admissions Manager |
The College encourages parents to contact the ‘initial contact’ staff member in the first instance. However, should you wish to discuss the matter further or believe it would be more appropriate to discuss the concern with a staff member other than the ‘initial contact’, please contact the ‘secondary contact’ staff member.
Should parents wish to discuss a matter with a staff member in person, an appointment must be made with that particular staff member. It is important to note that teaching staff spend most of the school day in class and often have before and after school meetings several days a week. They are therefore not always available for an interview or meeting with parents that has not been pre-arranged at a mutually convenient time.
Health Updates
Parent Access Module (PAM) Medical Information
It is important that the College has the latest medical information for your child. Please ensure this medical information is recorded accurately and updated when required.
Medical Profiles can be accessed through PAM by clicking on your child’s profile and selecting the Medical Profile tab.
Medication
The College cannot provide medication (including Paracetamol, Aspirin, Ibuprofen, etc). Students who require medication during the day (headaches, pain relief) must provide their own supplies, which may be stored at Student Recepion, to be accessed as required. Parents will also be required to complete a Medication Authority Form available from the Student Reception or on PAM. This form must be siged by an Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) registered medical / health practitioner.
Students with other significant health issues are requested that their management plans for their condition are dropped off at Reception.
Anaphylaxis - EpiPens, Anapens and Excursions
Parents of students that are at risk of Anaphylaxis should be aware that, in response to Ministerial Order 706, it is College policy and a requirement of legislation that students who attend the College must have supplied the College with a valid EpiPen or Anapen and a current Anaphylaxis Action Plan for their personal use.
In order for a student to attend an excursion or event off the premises, they must carry their individual College EpiPen or Anapen and their spare EpiPen or Anapen from home with them in order to attend that event. This is to ensure that sufficient medications are available should the student require them.
Parents/carers are required to update their daughter’s expired EpiPen or Anapen and Anaphylaxis Action Plan as soon as possible. EpiePns or Anapens and Action Plans need to be dropped at College Reception.
Asthma
It is advised for students who have asthma to carry their own reliever medication such as Ventolin in their pockets, however the College is able to supply Ventolin to a student who does not have their asthma medication and spacer on hand.
The administration of Ventolin is done after consulting your child’s Asthma Action Plan from PAM. If your child does not have an Asthma Action Plan and the situation is not deemed an emergency, the College will ring the parent/carer to have permission granted to administer the medication.
In the event of an asthma medical emergency and you have not supplied a current action plan, the First Aid Officer would follow emergency asthma care guidelines and an ambulance called.
Asthma Action Plans
It is important that the College has the latest medical information for your child. Parents and carers of students with Asthma are required to check their child’s medical profile and ensure that they have supplied to the College a current Asthma Action Plan signed by a Doctor. You can also email the Asthma Action Plan as an attachment to reception@mercycoburg.catholic.edu.au. Action and management plans for all significant health issues allow our First Aid Officers the ability to act quickly with the appropriate guidance to assist your child.
Medication
The College cannot provide medication (including Paracetamol, Aspirin, Ibuprofen, etc). Students who require medication during the day (headaches, pain relief) must provide their own supplies, which may be stored at Student Recepion, to be accessed as required. Arts and Technology
Last year, the Year 10 Art Students (the current Year 11s) started to design a Wall Mural that would be painted on at Oxygen Youth Space in Coburg North. Before the painting started, the students met Miriam, a happy, energetic and passionate Social Worker to discuss the exciting collaboration. Miriam informed the students that their designs had to include the following constraints:
- To reflect the MerriCreek and the Gardens surrounding Coburg and Oxygen Youth
- Native Floral and Fauna
- Bright colours
- The words ‘Merri-Bek’, Welcome, Oxygen and Youth
After this initial meeting, my Year 10 Art Students were excited to start. Many edits and tweaking of designs were made as well as lots of back-and-forth conversations between Miriam and myself that were relayed to the students.
Finally, this project is now complete! It gives me great pleasure to announce that the Wall Mural's grand opening will take place on the Monday 4 March at Oxygen Youth Space (4/8 Gaffney St, Coburg VIC 3058) from 3.45pm to 4.30pm.
I’d like to extend this invitation to the Mercy College community and if you would like to attend, please ensure that you RSVP to events@mercycoburg.catholic.edu.au before the 29 February.
The Year 11 Art Students and I look forward to seeing you all there!
